On July 2nd, 2025, Serve the City handed over the sign “Ik rem voor zebra’s” (English translation: “I brake for zebra crossings”) to Deputy Mayor of Traffic and Transport Melanie van der Horst, the Cyclists’ Union, and the Pedestrians’ Association at the Stopera. This was part of the Year of the Pedestrian. With this campaign, Serve the City wants to raise awareness for pedestrians in traffic and call on cyclists to stop at zebra crossings.
Why this campaign?
We all know traffic in Amsterdam is getting busier. We love cruising through the city on our (electric) bikes. But sometimes we forget to give priority to people waiting to cross at a zebra crossing. For people with limited mobility, older adults, or parents with kids, that’s a real challenge. By showing the sign, you’re signaling that you’re going to brake. You give others time to anticipate and avoid any near misses.
Our message: stick a sign or sticker on your bike to show you’re ready to brake and wait at zebra crossings.

Order your free sign or sticker!
Want to join the campaign? You can order a free sign or sticker for your bike. We’ll send it to your home, complete with tiewraps to easily attach it. Want to order in bulk? For your colleagues, your class, or your entire neighborhood. Just send an email to info@stcamsterdam.nl.
Support a zebra crossing
Soon, we’ll be handing out signs at several locations in the city to raise awareness that stopping at a zebra crossing is actually a great move. This is just the start. More awareness activities are coming throughout the year, with one clear goal: making traffic safer for pedestrians.
Do you know a zebra crossing where cyclists often forget to stop, making it unsafe for pedestrians? Let us know! Maybe we can organize our next action there for a safer Amsterdam. Send your suggestion to info@stcamsterdam.nl.
Heads up:
This campaign is for residents of Amsterdam and Weesp. Live elsewhere but want to launch something similar in your own town? Get in touch via info@stcamsterdam.nl
