Picking Up Volunteer Stories: De Uylenburg Petting Zoo

Picking Up Volunteer Stories: De Uylenburg Petting Zoo

On Saturday afternoon Serve the City volunteers gathered at De Uylenburg Petting Zoo in the heart of Rembrandtpark. The farm is more than 50 years old and it houses a variety of animals. Goats, rabbits, cats, ducks and more stroll around the farm providing fun to kids and older people while welcoming some cuddles. Workers at the petting zoo conveyed their passion for animals while showing the group around the facility making sure everyone could do their best with a smile.

The volunteers were in charge of removing the first autumn leaves from the ground, cleaning the goats and sheep shelters and, lastly, feeding the animals. Many first time volunteers were part of the activity, among them Taher (40) from Amsterdam who joined with his family.

Why did you choose De Uylenburg Petting Zoo today?

It was actually my girlfriend’s idea. It seemed like a fun project with the animals. We love animals. Even though it’s your first time.

How does volunteering add value to your life?

I think it’s nice to do something without asking anything in return. I feel we always do too little. So this was a nice opportunity to do it.

Why should other Amsterdammers give volunteering with STC a try?

It is good to do something for the community and maybe for a facility you also use yourself. Everybody should do it!

On the other hand, Joanna is an experienced volunteer and has been involved in charity events for years, like riding for 100 kilometers in London at night. She is 47 and originally from Liverpool but living in Amsterdam for 6 years

Why did you choose De Uylenburg Petting Zoo today?

I love animals. They give me a lot of joy and happiness. I find them hilarious.

When and how did you first get involved with STC?

I did other projects before this one. My first project was renovating a house. So painting and fixing. It was very fun.

What motivates you to volunteer?

There are actually a lot of motivations. I want to be part of the community and embed myself in Amsterdam a bit more. At the same time, getting out more and surrounding myself with nature. Volunteering drives me to be more social as well.

What is your best volunteering memory so far?

I think this is my best memory so far actually. Being around cats, ducks, chickens and other animals brings me joy.

Why should other Amsterdammers give volunteering with STC a try?

It is a worthy cause, It makes you feel good and meet great people who are like you that they want to give back.
