Meet Mees.

Age: 24

Country of origin: Netherlands

Can you tell a fun fact about yourself?

I live in the same building I grew up in but this time, in my own unit. And it is a community building.

Why did you choose to be a part of this particular project?

I’m currently involved in a research project focused on sustainable and environmental volunteering, which is something I’m really passionate about. I also work at a neighborhood community hub in Oud-West and volunteer there twice a month. It’s a rewarding experience that perfectly aligns with my personal values and commitment to making a positive impact.

When and how did you first get involved with STC?

I first got involved with STC through my university as part of a course I’m enrolled in. What really drew me to it was the flexibility—it’s non-committed volunteering, so you can help out whenever you’re available, which I think is great.

What motivated you to become a volunteer?

What motivated me to volunteer was the combination of making a positive impact and the social aspect of it. Volunteering isn’t just about the work you do—it’s also about connecting with people, building friendships, and becoming part of a community. The more you get involved, the more it feels like you’re part of something bigger.

How does volunteering add value to your daily life?

Volunteering adds so much value to my daily life because it aligns perfectly with my work and passions. I work with volunteers regularly on sustainability-related projects, and I often put in extra time because I genuinely enjoy it. Some of my tasks include organizing upcycling workshops and vegan cooking workshops—they’re both fun and meaningful ways to make an impact.

What is your best volunteering memory so far?

One of my favorite volunteering memories is seeing how volunteers keep coming back and start forming friendships with one another. It’s amazing to watch a real sense of community grow while contributing to a more sustainable society at the same time.

Have you learned something new about yourself through volunteering?

Through volunteering, I’ve discovered that I can make even tasks like picking up trash enjoyable by focusing on the social aspect and interacting with others. It’s also been a great way to improve my English, as I’ve had the chance to meet and connect with so many internationals.

Why should other Amsterdammers give volunteering with STC a go?

Volunteering with STC is a great opportunity because it’s so flexible, and you can try out different activities to see what you enjoy most. Whether it’s helping the elderly, cooking, or serving food, there’s something for everyone. It’s a meaningful way to give back and explore new experiences.

How do you think today’s project impacts the community in the short and long-term?

In the short term, today’s project creates a cleaner park with less litter, which everyone can immediately enjoy. In the long term, I hope that by seeing us out here picking up trash, people will feel inspired to think twice before littering. Overall, it’s a small but meaningful way to help the environment and promote positive change.
