With the holidays around the corner December is considered to be a cheerful month full of fun activities. Amsterdam’s streets are decorated with lights as far as the eye can see, our kids are writing their letters to Santa and we have to decide if we are going with a red or gold theme for our Christmas tree this year. With all these festivities going on it’s easy to forget that our city unfortunately also knows a big population of people who aren‘t so fortunate. Not everybody has a Christmas tree to decorate, gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning, or even people around to spend the holidays with. We at Serve the City strongly believe that everybody should enjoy the holidays. We think that it’s especially important during this time of the year to show the less fortunate of our society that we haven’t forgotten about them. This ideal gave birth to our 500 Heroes event, which, after last year successful edition, we are proud to present again this year. During the whole month of December we are organizing no less than 60 holiday themed events spread across the city, with as an emphasis on our project day on December 21st. A lot of events require a lot of volunteers and we are still looking for 500 Heroes to help us bring a nice memory for our community. Have a look at our 500 Heroes event page for an overview of all the projects we are organizing. How would you feel about an actual ‘oliebollen‘ party with the elderly residents of care Centre de Buitenhof? If that’s not your cup of tea, how about decorating an elderly house? Or perhaps helping out with the preparations for a Christmas dinner at the Food Bank is more up your alley. With over 60 projects we are sure that there is a project that matches your needs. We can’t do it without your help so please feel free to spread the word and get as many people involved as possible. Together we can spread the Christmas spirit and make sure that also the less privileged amongst us get to enjoy the holidays.
