Serve the City is a Christian volunteer movement that wants to help in a new and practical way. Serve the City inspires, mobilizes and motivates people of doing constructive volunteer work. Everybody can join. Serve the City seeks to use the specifik talents and knowledge of the volunteers in the projects.

Serve the City & the Ramadan Festival want to find the art of sharing!

Last year a small group of Serve the City and Ramadan Festival volunteers collected food for different Food Banks in Amsterdam. Will you help this year too?

Ramadan Festival??
Many Serve the City volunteers are Christians, then it might feel strange to do something with an organization called the Ramadan Festival. But maybe the question should be if it is not more strange not to. Many Christians have little or no contact with Muslims. But if you have no contact with others, how can God’s light shine through you? If we don’t know them, how can we love them? It lets you think of what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:20-23.

Art of sharing
The theme of the Ramadan Festival 2010, the art of sharing, can be viewed in its broadest sense. Sharing contact, experiences, backgrounds, but also very practical like sharing time and food. Therefore, the Food Bank Action (Voedselbankactie). Serve the City has been doing such actions for years and we hope through combining our strengths and time with the Ramadan Festival lots of food can be collected for the Food Banks.

When, where and how?
Specifically you will ask people that are about to enter the supermarket to buy one or more extra items from a shopping list. When they return they’ll give the item to you. It may sound boring, but if you notice how much you can do with such an action, then you’ll get filled with energy!

There are many actions next month and we need many volunteers. We are urgently looking for volunteers on Wednesday, August 11th to help with the first Food Bank Action. This day is also the opening of the Ramadan Festival. Lange Frans (Dutch music artist) will host this evening and all the volunteers will help hand the collected food to the Food Bank director. You also get to share a dinner with many people who use the Food Bank in Amsterdam North. Will you dine with us?
